“467mila premature deaths per year caused in Europe by the smog. It is still a pollution alert in the report to 2016, released by the european environment Agency (Eea) (here the pdf). Although air quality in Europe is improving, says the Eea – air pollution remains the principal environmental factor of the human health risk and lowers the quality of life.
85% of the population exposed to the smog
The report “air Quality in Europe to 2016,” presents an updated overview and analysis of the quality of the air in Europe for the period 2000-2014, on the basis of data from monitoring stations, the officers, among which more than 400 cities across Europe. Among other results, it appears that in 2014, about 85% of the urban population in the Eu was exposed to the so-called “fine dust” (particulate matter PM2.5) to levels deemed harmful to health by the World Health Organization. And the particulate matter, the report explains, has caused in Europe at least 467mila premature deaths. While the victims of the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are 71 thousand, and those of ozone (O3) are 17 thousand. Come on alarming even if the three figures can not be summed because of the numerous overlaps between the three pollutants.
The data for the Country: the records of the Italian and German
According to the report released by the Agency last year , Italy was among the Countries of the european Union, which recorded the most deaths are premature due to the pollution in the air. The current data confirm the trend, and the high number of deaths in Italy are attributable to the effects of the smog (though with a slight decrease), especially for nitrogen dioxide due to the download drive – in particular from diesel vehicles – but also from heating systems , power plants for the production of energy and a broad spectrum of industrial processes. In our Country, 66.630 the victims of the fine particulate (PM 2.5), 21.040 of the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and 3.380 for ozone (O3). Alarming data of the Germany: respectively 73. 400, 10.610 and 2,500 premature deaths. And those of the United Kingdom ( 37.930, 11. 940, 710). For the France you talk about 45.120, 8.230, and 1.780 victims. In the high part of the ranking of the Countries with the most victims for the pollution, we also find the Poland (48.270, 1.610 and 1,150 deaths) and the Spain (23.940, 4.280, 1.760).
The new limits of the Eu
The report data that is arriving in a few hours from the vote, in Strasbourg, of the directive, which introduces new limits to emissions of pollutants for the period 2020-2030. The measure was approved by the european Parliament in plenary session, with 499 votes in favor, 177 votes against and 28 abstentions. The particles involved are different in nature: ranging from the sulphur dioxide causes acid rain that can damage buildings and destroy crops, to particulate matter that can cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, ammonia (caused by the use of fertilizers and livestock). With the directive establishing the new national limits to reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds non-methane hydrocarbons (NMVOC), ammonia (NH3) and particulate matter (of less than a diameter of 2.5 micrometers). The goal: to reduce the impact of air pollution (but also water) on the health of around 50% by 2030. The lim its of the Italy were as follows: 71% – reduction compared to 2005 for SO2) by 2030, -65% for NOx, -46% for NMVOC, -16% for NH3 and 40% for particulate matter.
