Luke, a student of letters, tells TPI his version about the events at the University of bologna on the 9th of February
Thursday, February 9 2017 you are experiencing unrest and clashes between the police and students of the university of letters of Bologna. The university have mobilized against the turnstiles installed by the university to limit and control access to the facilities. But what has really happened?
In dozens of meetings organized in the preceding days the students, and the students that live daily, the library of via Zamboni, 36 had confirmed the hostility to the installation of the barriers that prevented the discretion of the access. Moved by this motivation, the 8th of February, the frequenters of the library have decided to react by removing physically the turnstiles.
on The 9th of February the students have found the library closed, and decided to occupy it, to discuss what was going on. After a few hours the police came in riot gear to evict the occupants. Subsequently, the agents have uploaded to a group that was once again heading towards the library, stopping two people.
Luke is a student of literature at the University of Bologna, who has assisted in the clashes that have occurred within the institution. He wanted to tell TPI the version of the facts according to the Collective of the university autonomous of Bologna.
"After the Christmas holidays the library has been opened with considerable delay in presenting a novelty," says Luke. "To access it was necessary to use the badge, otherwise it would not have been possible to enter. This decision was motivated by the university bodies as a standard to safeguard the security of the place."
"we have opposed from the beginning and we tried to interact with the rector and prorettrice to say that this provision was contrary to the nature of a place that was created to be enjoyed by all", continues Luca. "In just 48 hours we collected 548 signatures and gave them to the university. Monday, February 6, the prorettrice Trophy called us to a round table discussion by clarifying that the barriers had been mounted not for safety reasons but to monitor the access to the library that had little inflow. Motivation for us is not valid for a gesture that is in fact prohibited access to a public place".
"We have decided to remove so meticulous and professional the turnstiles, without causing damage to the library, a place where we care particularly," says the student. "In the aftermath of this gesture, I and all the other students of the university, we found the library closed. More than two hundred students gathered in the courtyard of the faculty coming to the decision to intrude on the library, and reopen it. We tried to get in touch with the rector and the prorettrice, but both have been know to be out of town".
"all of The sudden, and this was the most absurd, the five departments of the riot police and several police officers of the Digos, all in riot gear, broke into the library, where students like me and the other guys were discussing, studying, or sipping just a cup of coffee. Armed with batons, the police have begun to make a mess of the room, laying waste to every thing and sowing panic among young people who have been forced to exit".
According to the version of Luke, some of the students had reported wounds to the face and arms. Some students have had to get treatment for bruises.
"The situation was that the violence was unprecedented and unjustified: we were chased away with batons and shoving. We were not notified and there had been asked previously to leave the classroom," concludes Luke. "The chancellor, the prorettrice have taken on the responsibility of having called the police, saying that it was not possible to do otherwise, but to our requests for listening when we occupied the library has not presented anyone. We ask for the resignation of both, and an assumption of responsibility on the part of the mayor".
the honourable mr John Straw, member of the emilia-romagna region of the Italian Left, he wanted to express his disapproval with respect to the events that have occurred within the university. "The intervention of the forces of law and order in the public and frequented by the students is totally unacceptable," said Straw. "He is fed a climate of hatred and hostility throughout the city. I believe that the ministry of education and the Ministry of the Interior must give explanations".
