After more than three years after the sinking of the Costa Concordia arrived this evening the first verdict, the judges of the Court of Grosseto condemned Francesco Schettino to sixteen years and one month.

The court in Grosseto has rejected the request for arrest of Francesco Schettino. The courts have not considered subsistent the danger of escape of the former commander of the Costa Concordia that was not present in court. In addition to 16 years and one month sentence for Schettino also comes another sanction, ie disqualification for five years as commander of the ship.
 


 

Schettino and Costa cruises were ordered jointly and severally to compensate the plaintiffs, including the Prime Minister’s Office, some ministries, the Civil Defence, the Tuscany Region and the municipality of Isola del Giglio.

Ends up, after more than three years from the shipwreck off the island of Giglio in that killed 32 people, a process that is completed in 71 hearings, for almost 600 hours of debate in the classroom made at the Teatro Moderno since the City Court has insufficient space.

The first hearing there was July 17, 2013. Only one was the accused, Francesco Schettino, while 180 were witnesses and consultants paraded in a year and a half to lay on the stage of the theater, plus 18 experts.

There have been 379 the plaintiffs, represented by 65 different lawyers. The acts of the process are contained in 100 folders, to almost 56,000 pages, all material held in a room specially set up at the court. Ten expert responsible in the process, more than 30 orders of judges.

“I will fight forever to show that I have not abandoned the Costa Concordia. For the rest, expect to read the reasons of the judgment.” This first comment Francesco Schettino “disappointed” to confirm the crime of abandonment of the ship in the judgment that condemns him for the disaster of Giglio.
