Quiet, shy, able to spend days immersed in the calculations in his room, suddenly vanished March 25, 1938: Ettore Majorana is one of the most mysterious characters of the physics of ’900. After reopening in 2011 the case on his disappearance, the prosecutor in Rome came to the conclusion that the most enigmatic among the via Panisperna boys were alive between 1955 and 1959 and who was in Venezuela under a different name.
The conclusini are based on a photo taken in Venezuela in ’55, analyzed by Ris, in which Majorana, known by the surname Bini, appears with an immigrant Italian, Francesco Fasani, mechanical, immediately after receiving a loan. The man who appears along with Fasani is compatible with the physical features of the physical Catania.
On the evening of his disappearance Majorana had left Naples, where he was offered a chair, with a steamer bound for Palermo . He had announced his intention to disappear in a letter to his friend of Naples Antonio Carrelli, retracted the next day with another letter. Then there ‘was also a letter to the family in which he recommended: “I have only one wish: that there is to dress in black.” Since then there have been news. The surveys, taken in the days immediately following, did not lead to anything, and over the years have been the most advanced hypothesis, alongside that of suicide. Some believe that it went to Germany and later in Argentina, where some witnesses would have reported in Buenos Aires.
Some of his family, convinced that he could have chosen to withdraw into a monastery, have carried out research in this direction. Another hypothesis yet, recently denied, would identify Majorana with a bum particularly gifted math wandering in Sicily. If the Rome prosecutors to file the case is now, physicists around the world have never stopped to investigate the theories proposed by Majorana, so precursors of the times that only now beginning to understand.
The writings of Majorana are considered brilliant and too innovative to be included immediately. For example, it took 80 years to be able to see the particle properties extravagant that Majorana had predicted in 1937, able to be himself and simultaneously its opposite nell’antimateria. Physicists call it ” Majorana fermion ” and was observed only in October 2014.
Another ‘teaser’ theorized by Majorana was the possibility that neutrinos could be faster than light. For a time in 2011, the data of the Opera experiment had to think of a confirmation, but then you have proved the result of an error. The theory of Majorana is however still there, with the hypothesis that under certain conditions the particles can assume a mass ‘imaginary’ that svincolerebbe equations imposed by the theory of relativity.
