Costa Concordia: Francesco Schettino sentenced to 16 years and a … – euronews

The former commander of the Costa Concordia Francesco Schettino has been sentenced to 16 years and one month, in the first instance, in Grosseto. The prosecutor had asked for 26 years and three months.

Schettino is guilty of culpable disaster, multiple culpable homicide and abandoning ship. The court did not recognize the aggravating circumstance of the sinking manslaughter. The judgment was read by John Puliatti, presiding judge, who sentenced Schettino also to pay court costs.

Schettino, only defendant not present in court because sick according to lawyers, has listened to the judgment from a hotel of Grosseto. The judges have ruled out the immediate arrest because there is no risk of absconding abroad.

In solid with Costa Crociere, Schettino will have to compensate the plaintiffs including the island municipality of Giglio, in front to which the ship ran aground in part by the impact with a rock on the evening of January 13, 2012. 32 people died. Since last July, the wreck is in the port of Genoa to be dismantled.
