ROME
Italy cashing in by the new British Conservative government released the last elections the green light to the global approach and the principle of solidarity European immigration in the dossier. The President of the Council, Matteo Renzi met British Prime Minister, David Cameron arrived in Milan yesterday for a visit to the British Pavilion at the Expo. While knowing perfectly well that the UK immigration (which does not adhere to the Schengen Agreement) will adopt the opt-out, the Italian prime minister has got to Cameron a political consensus in principle on the principle of solidarity for the redistribution of migrants arriving on Italian coast.
If you add to this the agreement reached the day before yesterday in Luxembourg between Italy, Germany and France at the level of Ministers of the Interior, confirmed yesterday in Berlin by the foreign ministers of the three countries (the ‘ Italian Paolo Gentiloni) with a letter to the High Representative for Common Foreign Federica Mogherini, it has a clearer picture of the path that awaits the immigration agenda developed by the EU Commission. The Council on 25 and 26 June (as confirmed yesterday by the Minister Gentiloni) should only develop political understanding, partly because the presidency of Latvia has no interest to close the dossier. Then it’s up to the Luxembourg presidency in the Informal Council of Ministers of the Interior of 9 July (or more likely in Council Affairs widened the foreign ministers of 20 July) to finalize the plan of “relocation” of 40 thousand migrants (24 thousand from Italy and 16,000 from Greece) developed by the Commission. Although the “relocation” the UK remains very cautious, Cameron has accepted the principle of the comprehensive approach. “We must reach agreement in Europe – said Cameron – and I look forward to working with you on this issue. With Renzi we talked about immigration in the world and in the Mediterranean. We know that there are different approaches in the European Union on individual decisions to be taken in the next European Council, but there is the sharing of the fact that this problem is not just an Italian problem. “
Cameron said he was ready to cooperate by providing such resources and people needed to the coordination center of intelligence “Europol fusion cell” in Sicily “to try to break the link between immigrants and smugglers, and hunt down the criminal gangs in Libya.” Britain, Cameron added, “plays a role not only with ships in the Mediterranean but also with a large aid program in North Africa, which are increasing.” Matteo Renzi echoed by highlighting the “many points of collaboration with the United Kingdom” and noting that with Cameron “we shared ideas, discussions, considerations on the situation in front of a risotto alla Milanese.” Dossier on immigration for Renzi “how we deal with this issue are under discussion at this time on the assumption that the first need is to address the problem in Africa because Africa is not seen as a continent of series B by the international community and on this there is convergence with Cameron. ”
In general the climate of cooperation between Italy and English appeared yesterday very satisfying even the most involvement in the politics of London Union ahead of the referendum. According to Renzi “there is no future for Europe without the United Kingdom as a key partner of the Union.” For the Italian premier, “there are many points of collaboration with the United Kingdom and with the leadership of Cameron.” What will be in fact “a very intense discussion on the referendum in the UK to stay in the European Union will be very important for us.”
