– Spanish King Felipe VI entrusted the task of forming a government to socialist leader Pedro Sanchez. The decision of the monarch comes after two rounds of talks with political leaders and after the elections of 20 December have resulted in a fragmented parliament, which is required to get to a majority coalition. Sanchez will need at least three weeks.
“I suggested Mr. Pedro Sanchez Castejon as candidate for the post of prime minister,” said the king, according to the statement read by the President of Parliament, Patxi Lopez.
Earlier, outgoing Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had raised the idea of a grand coalition: “My proposal is a government headed by the Partido Popular with the PSOE and Ciudadanos”, declared the leader of the popular, Rajoy, after the meeting with the monarch Felipe VI.
Sanchez reiterated his willingness to talk with all political parties on the right as on the left, to create a “progressive” government. The party Podemos, finished third in the December elections, said he was willing to enter into a government with the Socialists.
