Syria, Palmyra Is the decapitated head of the archaeological site: the body hanging from a column – The Republic

DAMASCUS – had managed to hide hundreds of statues in a safe place before the extremists of the Islamic State arrived to conquer the ‘bride of the desert’, the ancient Roman city of Palmyra, Syria, which is UNESCO World Heritage Site. But they, the men of the Caliphate, they caught and imprisoned. Kept under pressure for four weeks. Then they cut off the head in front of an audience who witnessed the horror. As a final destruction, they hung his body in a column. State Islamic militants have beheaded the former head of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums of Palmyra, Khaled Asaad , 82, in a town square. After being killed, the archaeologist was hanging from an ancient column in the main square of Palmyra. Confirmation of what happened came by head of the Syrian Antiquities, Maamou Abdulkarim, who stated that he was informed by the family of the victim. For over half a century Asaad was the manager of Antiquities of Palmyra had been detained for over a month and subjected to questions from militant Sunni radicals, the current ultra orthodox Islam.

Abdulkarim said that Asaad was known for his work as a scholar at international level. It was known, in fact, for various scientific papers on Palmira, published in international archeology. Over the past decades he had worked with archaeological missions US, French, German and Swiss.

“The constant presence of these criminals in the city – said Abdulkarim according to BBC – is a shame and a bad omen for each column and for each fragment preserved archaeological there.” Palmira, in fact, is one of the major archaeological sites in the Middle East. It is located in central Syria and was conquered from Is May 21 last year after the withdrawal of the army of Bashar al-Assad, but do not know the true extent of the damage caused by the militiamen. The jihadists, in fact, have devastated several historic settlements in the territory they control. UNESCO said that the possible destruction of the city would be “a huge loss for humanity.”
