The director of the Center earthquakes:
“shook for a few days”
Alberto Michelini:” The citizens are aware of where they live if one lives in a house built well, can sleep well “
BOLOGNA – The aftershocks will continue for a few days, then on ‘ Bolognese Apennines for a while ‘time you can not rest easy. The area is in fact classified in the medium-high seismic hazard and in the past, not far from Castiglione dei Pepoli and Camugnano, occurred earthquakes of considerable intensity. This was stated by Alberto Michelini, director of the National Centre earthquakes National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. “It is not only a trail – he explains – the phenomenon was divided into a swarm of events began at 3:15 with a magnitude of 1.6 and then gradually stronger up to that of 7:51. The sequence at 11.25 was in full swing, we recorded 86 shocks. Not always noticeable by people. If I focus on those with a magnitude of 2.0 phenomena are halved to 49; if you count the ones from 3.0 up, are 4 before 7:51 and two of 3.2 and 3.4 succeeding. ”
AREAS – The areas concerned a re those of Vernio, Barberino del Mugello, Camugnano and Castiglione de ‘Pepoli. “An area of danger medium-high, never hit by strong earthquakes, which instead have shaken enclosed areas.” Michelini recalls the 6.2 earthquake of 1919 in Mugello, 20 kilometers away from the epicenter located today; and that of 1920, to the west, that shook the Lunigiana, with an intensity of 6.5 Richter, similar to that of the Eagle in 2009. “In areas adjacent to that struck this morning there were also other seismic swarms of intensity 4.0 in 2008 – still recalls Michelini – so in this part of the Apennines feature with which you release this event is of type swarm. ” It will be extended? “It will go on for a few days – admits the scholar – could occur if an earthquake stronger than this we do not know, we do not make predictions. Normally, though, you go dropping. ” Prevention in this case must, therefore Michelini reco mmended to take the national seismic hazard map (http://zonesismiche.mi.ingv.it/mappa_ps_apr04/italia.html) and study it in the light of the characteristics of their home. “The citizens are aware of where they live – even warns the student – if one lives in a house built well, with the seismic requirements, can sleep well.”
