Scotland has voted against independence in a referendum that has split the nation and kept Britain in suspense, according to a forecast from the BBC based on most votes counted.

With the results reported by 25 of the 32 constituencies, the BBC gives the Unionists to 54% compared to 46% of those who voted to break a union that lasted for 307 years.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who in the last days of the election campaign had engaged personally and had greater autonomy to Scotland, congratulated Alistair Darling, the head of the committee for no, and speak to the country in morning.
